What Is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA Calculator is an online tool that helps you calculate your Grade Point Average from course grades and credits. Add your courses, choose the grades, enter the credits, and the calculator does the math for you.
You can calculate a semester GPA, weighted GPA, unweighted GPA, cumulative GPA, and major GPA. The tool also includes GPA planning, grade conversion, and retake calculations.
GPA Calculator Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Course Name | Add an optional name for each course. |
| Grade | Select the grade earned for each course. |
| Credits | Enter the credit value of each course. |
| Add Course | Add more courses when needed. |
| Remove Course | Remove individual courses from the calculation. |
| Clear Courses | Quickly clear entered course information. |
GPA Scale Options
Not every school uses the same GPA scale. This calculator supports common 4.0 and 4.33 grading systems.
| Scale | How It Works |
|---|---|
| 4.0 Scale | The maximum standard GPA is 4.0. An A+ and A can both equal 4.0. |
| 4.33 Scale | An A+ can be worth 4.33 points. |
This is why two GPA calculators can sometimes show slightly different results for the same grades.
Letter Grades, Percentages and GPA Points
You can choose how grades are entered. This makes the calculator useful for different grading systems.
| Format | Example |
|---|---|
| Letter Grade | A, A-, B+, B, C+, F |
| Percentage | 92%, 85%, 74% |
| GPA Points | 4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 2.0 |
How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is usually based on grade points and course credits. Courses with more credits have a larger effect on your final GPA.
The calculator multiplies the grade points by the course credits. These values are called quality points.
It then adds the quality points from all included courses and divides the total by the number of GPA credits.
Weighted and Unweighted GPA
The calculator can work with both weighted and unweighted grades.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Unweighted | Uses the normal GPA value without course bonuses. |
| Honors | Can add extra GPA weight to an Honors course. |
| AP | Can apply additional weight to an AP course. |
| IB | Can apply additional weight to an IB course. |
| College / Dual | Can apply advanced-course weighting. |
| Custom Weighting | Lets you set your own Honors and advanced-course bonuses. |
Calculate Cumulative GPA
You can include your previous academic record when calculating a new cumulative GPA.
Enter your current cumulative GPA and the number of credits already completed. Then add your new courses.
The calculator combines the old and new academic records to estimate your updated cumulative GPA.
Major GPA
Some students need to know the GPA for courses related to their major. You can mark selected courses as major courses.
When enough major courses are included, the results can show a separate Major GPA along with the overall GPA.
Semester GPA
Enable semester groups when you want to organize courses by semester.
Each course can then be assigned to a semester. This helps you compare academic performance across different terms.
GPA Planning Calculator
The GPA Planning mode helps you estimate the grades needed to reach a target GPA.
| Input | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Current GPA | Your GPA before future courses. |
| Current Credits | The number of credits already included in your GPA. |
| Target GPA | The GPA you want to achieve. |
| Future Credits | The number of credits you expect to complete. |
| Maximum GPA | The highest GPA available on your grading scale. |
The calculator estimates the GPA you need across the future credits. It can also tell you when the selected target is not mathematically possible.
Grade Converter
The Grade Converter lets you quickly compare common grade formats.
- Convert a letter grade to GPA points.
- Convert a percentage to a letter grade.
- Convert a percentage to GPA points.
- Find the closest letter grade for a GPA value.
Percentage boundaries can differ by school. Use your institution’s official conversion chart when available.
Retake GPA Calculator
Retaking a course can change your cumulative GPA. The Retake GPA Impact calculator helps estimate that change.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Current GPA | Your GPA before the course retake. |
| Current Credits | Your existing GPA credits. |
| Course Credits | The credit value of the repeated course. |
| Old Grade | The grade earned on the first attempt. |
| New Grade | The expected or completed retake grade. |
| Replace Old Grade | Estimates the GPA when the old grade is replaced. |
| Count Both Attempts | Estimates the GPA when both grades remain in the calculation. |
Grades That May Not Affect GPA
Some course results do not normally carry GPA points. The calculator can exclude these grades from the GPA calculation.
- P – Pass
- NP – No Pass
- W – Withdrawn
- I – Incomplete
Academic policies vary. Your institution may handle these grades differently.
How to Use the GPA Calculator
- Choose GPA Calculator from Calculator Mode.
- Enter an optional course name.
- Enter the course credits.
- Select the grade.
- Add more courses if needed.
- Open Settings for advanced options.
- Select the correct GPA scale.
- Choose weighted or unweighted calculation if required.

Understanding Your Results
Your results may include more than one GPA value depending on the selected settings.
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| GPA | Your calculated GPA for the entered courses. |
| Total Credits | The credits included in the GPA calculation. |
| Weighted GPA | GPA after eligible course bonuses are applied. |
| Unweighted GPA | GPA without course difficulty bonuses. |
| Cumulative GPA | Your previous GPA combined with the new courses. |
| Major GPA | GPA calculated from courses marked as major courses. |
Why Do GPA Calculators Show Different Results?
Two calculators can show different GPAs even when you enter the same courses. This does not always mean one calculator is wrong.
The difference usually comes from the grading scale. For example, one system may treat A+ as 4.00 while another treats it as 4.33.
Some schools also use 3.70 for A-, while others use 3.67. Small differences become more noticeable when several courses are included.
Always choose the GPA scale that matches your school.
Save, Load and Print
You can save your current GPA information in the browser and return to it later. The Load option restores saved calculator data.
You can also print the results when you need a simple copy for your records or academic planning.
Conclusion
The GPA Calculator gives you a quick way to calculate grades, credits, weighted GPA, cumulative GPA, and major GPA in one place.
The GPA Planner, Grade Converter, and Retake GPA tools can also help with future academic planning. For the most accurate result, always select the grading scale used by your school or university.
